Year 2000 Compliance for the BarTender for Windows label software

Document last updated 14 Feb 2003

Seagull Scientific Systems guarantees that the BarTender for Windows is “Year 2000” compliant.

The BarTender Software Design Criteria: Issues regarding the Year 2000 were considered in the design of the 32-bit BarTender (version 5.0 and higher) in order to nullify the impact and negate upgrade requirements.

Product Guarantee: Extensive testing has shown that the BarTender for Windows (versions 5.0 and higher) contain no adverse dependencies on the pending changeover to the new millennium. Moreover, Seagull Scientific Systems guarantees Year 2000 compliance. Should any unforeseen Year 2000 dependencies arise in the 32-bit product, Seagull will provide a software upgrade free of charge that solves the problem.

System Dependency: Because Seagull has no control over the design of the personal computer on which the BarTender is used, Seagull's Year 2000 Compliance guarantee applies only to the BarTender software itself. If the individual computer does not itself properly support dates after December 31, 1999, Year 2000 compliance by the BarTender cannot be guaranteed. Likewise, if Windows itself contains a hitherto unknown Year 2000 bug, that could possibly affect the BarTender in ways beyond our control.

Other Software: As with the 32-bit version of the BarTender for Windows, the 16-bit version (version 4.29 and lower) uses Windows-provided date functions. Although we know of no reason why this older product should not also be Year 2000 compliant, it has not received the same extensive testing as the 32-bit version (versions 5.0 and higher) and it is therefore not guaranteed. OmniBar and the BarTender for DOS are not affected by Y2K issues because they do not have date functions.

Please see the information below for some details on our testing.

Year 2000 Tests and Compatibility Details

Beginning of Year Test: The system date of the test system was set to January 1, 2000. Each of the BarTender's available date functions were tested, including the use of negative offset values that caused the effective date output to cross backwards over the year 2000 boundary into the month of December, 1999. All date functions performed properly.

End of Year Test: The system date of the test system was set to December 31, 1999. Each of the BarTender's available date functions were tested, including the use of positive offset values that caused the effective date output to cross forwards over the year 2000 boundary into the month of January, 2000. All date functions performed properly.

Other Similar Tests: The following additional dates received the same two tests. That is, both an earlier date and a later date were entered and positive and negative offset values were employed to force the resultant date first to and then past the date being tested. All date math executed properly. Dates tested:

  • December 31, 2000
  • February 29, 2000
  • January 1, 2001
  • December 31, 2001

Retention of Year Digits: Entered dates retain their number of year digits for any date math and printing to be performed. That is, a date entered in with a two-digit year retains a two-digit year. Likewise, a four-digit year remains as four digits.

Other Data Entry Issues: Some developers (especially COBOL developers) are particularly worried about the dates 9/9/99 and 9/9/1999 because some programs give numbers with lots of nines special treatment. The BarTender (which was NOT written in COBOL) properly handles these date values and all other dates that we know of.
