B
Batch Data Collection, collect the information in the field by scanning barcodes and/or keypad entry into the unit's memory. Upload the data from the unit to your computer through a cable or cradle type interface on a periodic basis. Amount of data storage is based on the amount of memory in the unit.
Bluetooth -- A standard for providing short-range wireless connections between computers, Pocket PCs, and other devices. This provides a fast, convenient way to exchange information between a Pocket PC and a computer. Also can be described as a "personal wireless network". D
DOS (Disk Operating System) E
The popular name for a wireless local-area network that conforms to the 802.11b specification of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). Wi-Fi networks allow data transfer up to a very fast 11MB per second. They are used by many organizations, and are increasingly available in airports and other public places. Some Pocket PCs have built-in Wi-Fi capabilities, while others accept Wi-Fi expansion cards. H
HD (High-Density) scanner for scanning high density barcodes. I
Image Reader K
KBW (Keyboard Wedge Scanner). Scanner or base is equipped with a special splitter cable where one end plugs into the computer's keyboard port and the other end plugs into the regular keyboard. Both the scanner and regular keyboard are operational. When a barcode is scanned the scanner emulates keyboard entry to the computer screen. L
Linux is a free Unix-type operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers around the world. Developed under the GNU General Public License , the source code for Linux is freely available to everyone.
LR (Long Range) scanner for scanning barcodes from a greater distance than the standard range scanners but may have difficulty scanning high density barcodes. O
1D (1D Laser) Scanner supports one dimensional also called linear barcodes. One dimensional barcodes are the most common type of barcode consisting of a series of bars and spaces of different widths.
OpenAir non-802.11, made by Proxim
OS (Operating System) Data Collector is programmable using the proprietary application builder designed specifically for this unit. P
Palm OS is a fully ARM-native, 32-bit operating system running on new hardware. The existing library of thousands of software titles compliant with Palm OS 5 will work even better than before, due to the increased speed of the processor, the efficient OS, and software enhancements like the high-density Window Manager.
A Pocket PC -- Terminal supports the Microsoft Pocket PC operating system. Pocket PC is a special version of Windows CE with its own enhancements that includes the Microsoft tools. Depending on options it may enable you to store and retrieve e-mail, contacts, appointments, play multimedia files, games, exchange text messages with MSN Messenger, browse the Web, and more. R
RF (RF/Cordless) -- Cordless scanners kits include a base that is connected to the computer. The base and the scanner communicate with each other via radio waves so that when a barcode is scanned the information is sent immediately to the PC through the base.
RS232 -- Scanner or base is connected to the computers serial or RS232 port. When a barcode is scanned the string representing the barcode is sent to the serial port. Software is required to read the serial data and bring it into your application. S
STD (Standard Range) scanner for scanning barcodes from a medium distance. Standard range scanners are very versatile capable of scanning well into the high density spectrum of barcodes and yet provides a good distance or depth of field when scanning 'normal' (100% UPC) sized barcodes.
Symbol 802.11 Frequency Hopping (1-2 MB radio) -- Frequency-hopping spread-spectrum (FHSS) uses a narrowband carrier that changes frequency in a pattern known to both transmitter and receiver. Part of the data is transmitted on one frequency, then it hops to a different frequency and transmit another part of the data. T
2D (2D Laser). Scanner capable of scanning certain 2D barcodes. While linear barcodes, also called 1D barcodes, are a series bars and spaces and the barcode data is contained in a single line crossing all of the bars, 2D barcodes contain data in both the horizontal and in the vertical axis. Often 2D barcodes look like a patchwork quilt or a target. 2D barcodes can contain much more data or display the same amount of data but in a much smaller space than a linear barcode. Many of the 2D scanners will only scan PDF-417 barcodes while some offer support for many of the 2D barcode styles. U
USB (Universial Serial Bus) Scanner or base connects to the computer through a USB port. Most of the time when connected in this way the scanner emulates the keyboard on the computer. W The popular name for a wireless local-area network that conforms to the 802.11b specification of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). Wi-Fi networks allow data transfer up to a very fast 11MB per second. They are used by many organizations, and are increasingly available in airports and other public places. Some Pocket PCs have built-in Wi-Fi capabilities, while others accept Wi-Fi expansion cards.
Windows CE Terminal supports a Windows CE operating system. May include Windows CE .NET, Windows CE 4.x or Windows CE 3.x. Combines an advanced real-time embedded operating system with the powerful tools for rapidly creating the next generation of smart, connected, and small-footprint devices.
