What is fragmentation?

Fragmentation occurs when files are split into pieces, so they can fit into the nearest available disk spaces.This allows the operating systems to store (save) files more rapidly -- disks are mechanical, and it takes time for the "arm" to move to a designated, possibly more "ideal" spot on the disk. Fragmentation also allows disks to make full use of available disk space (In the old days, you couldn't save a file unless there was a spot big enough to fit the whole file).

Frag Guard � (Windows NT and 2000 only)
Online prevention of fragmentation in your most critical NT/2000 system files: the Master File Table (MFT) and Paging Files.

Fragmentation of the MFT can seriously impact performance as the operating system has to go through the MFT to retrieve any file on the disk. If the MFT is already fragmented when Diskeeper is installed, Diskeeper can defragment it with a boot-time defragmentation feature, then maintain this consolidated state.

Frag Guard works much the same way with the Paging File. This is a specialized NT file on the disk which acts as an extension of the computer�s memory. When memory fills up, the system can utilize this file as virtual memory. A fragmented Paging file impacts performance when it reads data back into system memory. The greater the fragmentation, the slower vital computer operations will perform.

Different boxes are on different work schedules and have different work loads. Now you can group any set of disks together under the same defragmentation schedule. Product Specifications
Workstation Version: Installs on any Alpha or x86 (or equivalent) processor that is running windows NT Workstation. Only uses 4 MB disk space or less.

Server Version: Runs on any x86 (including Pentium) or Alpha computer that is running Windows NT Server 3.51 or greater. Contains the network defragmentation controls�and controls all installed Diskeeper programs throughout the network. Uses only 4 MB disk space or less.

Diskeeper Server Version 6.0 is required for the scheduling and controlling of Diskeeper Workstation Version 3.0 through 6.0 installed across the network. Diskeeper Server Version 6.0 will install and run on a Windows NT Workstation (if the Diskeeper Server Version license has been purchased for that machine) but Windows 95/98 workstations will only accept Diskeeper Workstation Version 5.0, or 6.0.
