File Diagnostics

The developer of dSalvage Professional stressed file diagnostics. Attempting file repair without fully understanding the nature of the damage is like a surgeon performing an operation on you before he understands the nature of your problem.

dSALVAGE contains two basic kinds of diagnostic processes:

  1. Command-line diagnostics for checking a group of DBF files.
  2. Interactive diagnostics for a detailed determination of damage in a single file.

The command-line diagnostic process can be invoked from the DOS prompt. Its output is a report (that can be re-directed to a text file) which merely indicates whether or not the target file(s) contain damage.

The interactive diagnostic process is initiated from within the interactive mode of dSALVAGE. It starts by analyzing the disk's File Allocation Table looking for lost cluster and cross-linking damage. If, for example, cross-linking is found, dSALVAGE allows you to rebuild the file's allocation chain automatically. After this analysis, dSALVAGE proceeds to analyze the user-selected file after which it provides a detailed damage report on the screen together with a recovery recommendation. Recovery is usually accomplished with a few keystrokes.
