Help System
- On-Line help is available at every stage of operation
Command-Line Diagnostics
- Checks the health of your data files from the DOS prompt
or from within a batch file
- dSalvage Professional supports wild-cards and pathing
- Produces a report for screen display or redirection to a
file. The report contains a one-line statement for each
file checked indicating whether or not the file is
healthy
Internal Diagnostics
- Checks the disk for the existence of cross-linking or
lost cluster damage in the File Allocation Table and
provide an on-screen report of its findings
- Allows immediate repair if problems are discovered, then
goes on to diagnose the user-specified data file
resulting in a detailed on-screen diagnostic report of
all errors found together with a recovery
recommendation
- Recovery involves only a few keystrokes in most cases
- Proper diagnosis is a
critical element in file recovery since symptoms
observed while in your application do not always reflect
the true damage situation. Improper recovery
processes can compound damage and make recovery more
difficult or impossible
Remove Non-ASCII Trash in
Records
- File is positioned to first damaged record
- Repairs records with just one keystroke
- Continue-from-here finds the next bad record
- Move to the next or previous record at any time
- Performs instant diagnosis of any record
- All repairs are done under user control
Unwanted End-of-File Markers
- Converts unwanted end-of-file markers to harmless spaces
throughout the file with a single keystroke
Damaged or Missing File Headers
- Transplants replacement headers from a donor file or you
can use the Header Builder to construct a new header from
the data in the damaged file
Data Offset
- File is automatically positioned to the offset
- Realigns the file with just one keystroke
- Continue-from-here finds any offsets
- Move to next or previous record at any time
- Performs instant diagnosis of any record
Un-ZAP
- Automatic Un-ZAP
- Completely recover a ZAP'd
file, that has not been overwritten, with a single
keystroke - no need to rewrite the file.
- Manually Assisted Un-ZAP
- Recover non-overwritten portions of a partially
overwritten ZAP'd file. You can access and retrieve
data from any free area of your disk. The data at the
boundaries of deallocated clusters is displayed,
allowing you to accept or reject it. Accepted clusters
are then added to the file's allocation chain, while
the File Allocation Table and the disk directory are
updated automatically.
Extended ASCII Characters Switch
- Allows all extended ASCII characters, graphics, to be
treated as acceptable characters
All-Characters Switch and T Switch
- All-characters switch allows all characters excepts nulls
to be treated as acceptable characters
- The T switch allows all characters, including nulls, in
Character fields
Header Editor
- With dSalvage Professional, you can change information in
a damaged header to make it compatible with the file's
data:
- Record Size
- Field Names
- Record Count
- Field Types
- Field Count
- Field Widths
- Field Decimals
- Version Number
- Change by selecting a parameter and entering a new value
-- the changes do not require you to rewrite the file
- Optionally copy header to an external file
- Change field names without having to recopy the file
Record Editor
- Displays data in typical Xbase edit format allowing user
to access any record and change data in any field,
including memo field pointers
- Easily search for data
- Continues the data search from the location of the last
find
- Move to any record by specifying the absolute or relative
record number
- Count good records and add optional end-of-file marker
after the last record
- Record Editor provides direct access to the contents of
an associated memo file enabling scanning of memo blocks,
character string search of memo blocks, and automatic
correction of memo field pointers
Byte Stream Editor
- Displays file data as an unformatted continuous character
stream
- Changes any data by over-typing
- Search/find data even if it crosses field or record
boundaries
- Continues your data search from the location of the last
find
- Position the cursor to a desired byte by specifying the
absolute or relative byte location - it's useful for
measuring record/field lengths
- Force a write to disk at any time
Allows Full Block Operations: Mark a block; Copy or move a
block to another location; Write a block to an external file;
Delete a block, with undelete capability; Paste data from an
external file; Use with any type of file including COM and EXE
files.
Hex Editor
- Displays file data, including header, in hex and ASCII
format
- Changes any file byte by typing over current data in hex
or ASCII
- Searches for any byte, including nulls, control and
extended ASCII characters, anywhere in the file,
including the header
- Continues the search from the location of the last
find
- Can be used with any type of file including COM and EXE
files
- Allows the high-bit characters in French, German, Spanish
and/or Portuguese to be treated as acceptable
characters

versions of FoxPro, dBASE, and all other Xbase
products
- No file size or disk size limit
- Network compatible with minor
limitations
dSalvage and Visual FoxPro
Microsoft has made extensive changes to the DBF file structure
in Visual FoxPro. In addition, they have introduced a new type
of DBF file (having a DBC extension) that is a container for
one or more DBF table files. The DBF's are called
tables and the DBC's are called databases.
The current version of dSALVAGE is not compatible
with Visual FoxPro files.
