AllFusion ERwin Data Modeler: Database Design Made Easy
AllFusion® ERwin® Data Modeler (AllFusion ERwin DM) from Computer
Associates International, Inc. (CA) is an industry-leading data modeling solution
that enables you to create and maintain databases, data warehouses and
enterprise data resource models. Data models help you visualize data structures
so that you can organize, manage and moderate data complexities, database
technologies and the deployment environment.
Data — A Critical Business Asset
Maintaining a competitive edge in today’s market requires faster, better decisions
based on accurate data. Companies must manage and maintain their data while facing
increasingly complex challenges such as
mergers and acquisitions, lack of qualified
staff and constantly changing technology. In
order to build high-performance business
applications, data marts and data warehouses,
organizations need to build a solid database
foundation.
Successful Information Management Starts With Optimal
Database Design
AllFusion ERwin DM enables you to visualize
complex data structures and inventory
information assets as well as establish
enterprise-wide standards for managing
data. AllFusion ERwin Data Modeler intelligently streamlines the design
process and synchronizes the model with
the database design. Modelers can use this
product to design transactional systems,
data marts and data warehouses in one
integrated environment.
AllFusion ERwin DM increases productivity
by providing an easy-to-use graphical
environment that simplifies database design
and automates many time-consuming tasks,
accelerating the creation of high-quality,
high-performance transactional and data
warehouse databases. AllFusion ERwin Data Modeler enhances
communication in your organization because
database administrators and developers can
share and reuse models as well as present
numerous, complex data assets in a format
that is easy to understand and maintain. In
addition, AllFusion ERwin Data Modelercan help your
organization respond faster to evolving
business needs by showing the impact of
change on information assets and allowing
changes to be implemented quickly.
ERwin Features and
Functionalities
ERwin Data Modeler :Design Layer Architecture
AllFusion
ERwin DM has the flexibility to generate the
kind of data model that meets your needs.
Separate logical and physical models are
supported, along with the traditional, combined
logical/physical model (see Figure 1).
Knowledge of the relationships and history
of the complete design is maintained,
allowing you to quickly resolve the impact
of changes from one layer to the next.
ERwin Data Modeler: Transform Technology
Rarely does a
physical database design match the original
logical data design. Business constraints
dictate the need to denormalize tables to
meet the performance requirements of
today’s business applications. Transform
technology lets you implement these types
of changes while maintaining the integrity of
the original design.
ERwin Data Modeler: Standards Definition
The definition and
maintenance of standards is supported
through the Domain Dictionary, Naming
Standards Editor and Datatype Standards
Editor. The Domain Dictionary contains
reusable attributes and helps ensure consistent
names and definitions across the model.
The Naming Standards editor lets you create
a glossary of valid words, abbreviations and
naming rules that can also be reused across the model. The Datatype Standards Editor
enables you to define the standards for
mapping both user-defined and default data
types to specific database management
system data types.
ERwin Data Modeler: Large Model Management
AllFusion
ERwin DM helps you manage large
enterprise models through Subject Areas
and Stored Displays. Subject Areas provide
a focused view for individual modelers,
dividing the model into smaller, manageable
subsets. Stored Displays offer multiple
graphical views of the model or its Subject
Areas, facilitating information exchange
between specialized groups of users.
ERwin Data Modeler: Complete Compare
This powerful feature
automates model and database synchronization.
AllFusion ERwin DM compares the model with the database,
displays the differences and lets you select
which differences to move into the model
and which to generate to the database. If
model changes move into the database,
AllFusion ERwin DM automatically generates
a database alter script. In addition, model-to model
Complete Compare and importing/
exporting capabilities are offered.
ERwin Data Modeler: Database Design Generation
AllFusion
ERwin DM includes optimized referential
integrity trigger templates and a rich crossdatabase
macro language, allowing you to
customize triggers and stored procedures.
From the model’s physical design, full
definitions (as appropriate for the target
database) are generated for databases/
tablespaces, tables and views, columns
with defaults and domain constraints,
primary keys, foreign keys and indexes,
stored procedure and trigger code, and
volumetric and other physical properties.
ERwin Data Modeler: Data Warehouse and Data Mart Design
The performance, usability and value of a
data warehouse are determined by its
underlying design. AllFusion ERwin DM
supports data warehousing-specific modeling
techniques (such as Star Schema and
Snowflake dimensional modeling), thereby
optimizing the data warehouse for your
performance and analysis needs. ERwin Data Modeler also
captures and documents a rich set of
information about the warehouse, including
data sources, transformation logic and data
management rules.
ERwin Data Modeler: Drawing Objects
AllFusion ERwin DM lets
you graphically represent business rules
through drawing objects. These objects,
such as lines and ellipses, are fully editable
and you can customize their font and color.
Model Explorer.
The AllFusion ERwin DM Model Explorer provides an additional method
for creating and modifying model objects.
Rather than presenting a picture of the model
in the traditional diagram window manner,
the Model Explorer provides an organized,
ordered view of the model and its contents.
The Model Explorer lets you create, display,
navigate and modify a model using the
model, subject area or domains pane.
ERwin Data Modeler: Reporting and Printing
Visualization and
publication are the keys to communication
and collaboration in data modeling. AllFusion
ERwin DM provides flexible, customizable
reporting and printing capabilities.
ERwin Data Modeler: Complete, Open and Integrated
The
value proposition of the AllFusion Erwin DM
can be extended in unique and valuable
ways through the use of tightly integrated
AllFusion® companion products and/or thirdparty
metadata integrations.
- AllFusion Saphir Option for ERP.
This
solution extracts and stores detailed
metadata from cryptic ERP packages such
as SAP R/3, SAP BW, PeopleSoft and J.D.
Edwards. AllFusion Saphir Option then
allows the user to search, browse and
subset this ERP-specific metadata prior to
creating AllFusion ERwin DM models.
These “ERP-specific” AllFusion ERwin
DM models can then be utilized to support
numerous initiatives, such as ad hoc
reporting, data warehousing and metadata
management, as well as ERP package
management and customization.
- AllFusion Data Model: Validator
This
valuable add-in allows modelers to
automate the validation of their database
designs, thus allowing them to perform
this task quicker, more accurately and
earlier in the development life cycle. The
AllFusion Data Model Validator provides
the user with the choice of more than 80
ranked diagnostics to be applied against
their data models. AllFusion Data Model
Validator provides a knowledge base,
design tips and corrective suggestions, as
well as generating corrective scripts to be
applied against the model and associated
database.
- ERwin Data Modeler: API and Add-In
Manager
Using the ERwin Data Modeler
API and Add-In Manager, you can work
with secondary software applications
supplied by third parties to perform specific
tasks outside the boundaries and offerings
included in AllFusion ERwin DM.
