If you've ever used the App.LogEvent method to report an event from Visual Basic to the event log, you know that all events reported that way appear as if they came from the VB runtime. That's because you are limited to using the VB runtime event source. Even if you know how to use the API functions to report events, if you want to define your own messages and categories you must first create an event source -- which is complex, poorly documented and requires the use of a message compiler, resource compiler, and linker. Then there are the registration issues...let's just say it's a tough and time consuming task for a busy VB programmer.

Desaware's event log toolkit makes it quick and easy to take full advantage of the event log from Visual Basic. An easy to use application allows you to define messages and categories in multiple languages and instantly compile them into your own custom event sources. It also produces .BAS and .h header files containing the constants for your messages, making them easy to use in your VB applications.

Event sources made with the toolkit are self-registering -- use regsvr32 to register them like a COM component. This, combined with the fact that the event source has no DLL dependencies makes distribution a snap (and there are, of course, no royalty fees on distribution of event sources created with the toolkit.

But that's not all...

The toolkit includes a Visual Basic class that wraps the event log API functions (that can be very tricky to use). You can read the event log, log events, backup and clear the event logs. It even supports the tricky user ID parameters so you can specify account sources for events. And full source code is included, so you can just drop it into your project.

Compatibility

Windows 2000 or NT 4.0, Visual Basic 5.0 or 6.0. Requires NT 4.0 SP 3 or later when creating event sources, but event sources may be distributed and registered on any NT 4.0 or later system.
