QuarkCopyDesk SE contains the full suite of features for writing, editing, formatting, and outputting copy for publication. But the real power of QuarkCopyDesk SE lies in its ability to impose typographical control throughout the editorial production process. Using QuarkCopyDesk SE, the non-designers participating in your publishing workflow can now go about their work knowing precisely how their textual modifications fit within an article’s established layout.

Compatibility with QuarkXPress
QuarkCopyDesk SE uses the same text processing engine as QuarkXPress. As a result, copy moves between non-designers and designers more smoothly than ever before. Layouts created in QuarkXPress can be exported to QuarkCopyDesk with a click of the mouse, and all typographic attributes -- such as style sheets, article geometry, and hyphenation and justification rules -- are maintained in the export process.

Required QuarkXTensions

Quark designed QuarkCopyDesk SE to fit seamlessly within QuarkXPress-based workflows. The key to this interaction is the ability to import and export files between the two applications. If you intend to transfer files between QuarkCopyDesk SE (".qcd" file format) and QuarkXPress (".qxd" file format), you must install the following Quark XTensions modules in QuarkXPress:

• QuarkCopyDesk Filter -- lets you import/export QuarkCopyDesk SE files
• NotesXT -- lets you view QuarkCopyDesk SE notes in QuarkXPress

You may find the following XTensions useful, although it is not required:

• Type Tricks -- adds a variety of typographic utilities to QuarkXPress

These XTensions are also available on the QuarkCopyDesk SE product CD in the For QuarkXPress --> XTension folder.

Writers and editors open an exported article in QuarkCopyDesk SE and view the layout exactly as the artist designed it. Although they can view all the graphic elements (which are exported as page pictures), only the text is editable. This ensures the design will not be inadvertently altered as the article is passed among reviewers.

Reflow Eliminated
Because the article’s typographic attributes and geometry are exported verbatim from QuarkXPress, writers and editors using QuarkCopyDesk SE know the exact article length, down to the line and word count. When they return the article to the designer, who imports it back into the master QuarkXPress layout, it fits perfectly. Text reflow is virtually eliminated, which dramatically improves efficiency. View line counts, line breaks, and column breaks in Galley view
These and other interface elements give you precise information on how your copy fits in the layout. Underset or overset amounts, word and line counts, and column depths are continuously displayed in the interface.

Eliminate reflow
Writers, editors, and reviewers working in QuarkCopyDesk SE know the precise article geometry. When imported into the master QuarkXPress layout, their revised copy fits perfectly.

Attach notes
The notes feature lets you place electronic notes, such as comments or queries, directly in the article text. You can also use notes to copy and paste editorial additions or deletions, which will travel along with the article even when imported into QuarkXPress.

Work with multiple components
QuarkCopyDesk SE articles can contain multiple, independent components (for example, a primary story and a related sidebar could be two components in the same article).

Import and export text in common formats
QuarkCopyDesk SE contains filters for exchanging text with Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, XPress Tags, and other common word processing formats.
